Basics 1. Field of the Invention
The present invention generally relates to the electrical connector or penetrator assemblies for connecting two cables or connecting a cable to electrical equipment, and is particularly related to a multi-layer conductor pin for incorporation into electrical or hybrid connectors or penetrators for subsea or use in other harsh environments, and a multi-layer pin manufacturing method.
2. Related technique
Electrical connector or penetrator units include one or more conductors or conductor pins that extend through the units to carry current between opposite ends of the connector or penetrator, connecting two cables or a cable and electrical equipment. Usually, these conductors are surrounded by a sealing sleeve or have an external sealing layer. In a typical electrical penetrator or feed through arrangement, a conductor pin extends through a hole in a sleeve or sealing body. In a typical electrical connector, plug and receptacle units or connector parts are each connected to cables or other devices intended to be joined by the connector to form complete circuits. One or more connector pins or probes extend through the plug unit and are designed for plug-in coupling with one or more sockets aligned to the receptacle unit. In each case, the conductive pin is surrounded by the appropriate seal along at least part of its length.
The partial discharge at high AC voltages between conductor and seal in typical connectors and penetrators is a problem of long-term reliability. In a connector / penetrator the seal is usually formed by overmolding the conductor or fitting a sealing sleeve or layer over the conductor. In both methods, it is not possible to eliminate

Claims (16)

1. Multilayer conductive pin for an adverse environment connector or penetrator characterized by the fact that it comprises:
a conductive rod having first and second ends;
an outer layer of non-conductive insulating material that extends over at least part of the length of the pin; and an intermediate layer of the conductive or semiconductor material sandwiched between the outer layer and the conductive rod and connected substantially without gaps to the other outer insulating layer.

2. Conductive pin, according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the intermediate layer is connected to both the outer layer and the conductive rod and the outer layer is overmolded over the intermediate layer and the conductive rod.

Conductive pin according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the outer layer is made of polymer material and the intermediate layer comprises a polymer base material that can be bonded with the outer layer and containing additives of conductive material for form a semiconductor material, and the polymer base material is the same polymer material as the outer layer.

Conductive pin according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the outer layer is made of thermo-adjustable material and the intermediate layer comprises a thermo-adjustable base material that can be bonded to the outer layer and containing additives of conductive material to form a semiconductor material.

Conductive pin according to claim 2, characterized in that the intermediate layer comprises an adhesive thermo-plastic material containing carbon or metallic particles, the base material comprising a material selected to adhere to the outer layer during molding of the outer layer over the middle layer.

6. Conductive pin, according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the outer layer is selected from the group consisting of engineering plastic, thermo-adjustable materials and ceramic materials.

7. Conductive pin, according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the intermediate layer is applied to the conductive rod and the insulating layer is overmoulded on the rod, and the intermediate layer comprises a painted coating of conductive or semiconductor material, a layer
2/3 powder coated with conductive or semiconductor material, a polymer molded layer, a sprayed coating of conductive or semiconductor material, or a dipped coating of conductive or semiconductor material.

8. Conductive pin according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the insulating layer is a tube formed separately having an outer surface and an inner surface and the intermediate layer is connected to the inner surface of the tube.

Conductive pin according to claim 8, characterized by the fact that the tube has opposite first and second end faces and the intermediate layer extends over the end faces of the tube, a first sealing sleeve of conductive material extending between the outer surface of the tube and the conductive rod at the first end of the insulating tube and a second sealing sleeve of conductive material extending between the outer surface of the insulating tube and the conductive rod at the second end of the insulating tube.

Conductive pin according to claim 8, characterized in that the intermediate layer comprises a coating of semiconductor material on the inner surface of the through hole of the tube, a layer of semiconductor material, or a coating of conductive material other than conductor rod material that is adhered to the through hole of the tube.

Conductor pin according to claim 8, characterized in that the conductor rod comprises first and second conductor portions, the first conductor portion extending through the first end of the hole and ending near the second end of the hole and having an outer end engaging with a first cable, the second conductor portion extending through the second end of the hole and ending near the first end of the hole and having an outer end engaging with a second cable, and the conductor portions they have internal ends that are in electrical communication within the through hole, at least one of the conductor portions being movable in relation to the other conductor portion.

Conductive pin according to claim 11, characterized in that it comprises a first metal sealing sleeve attached to the first end of the outer tube and to the first portion of the conductor to form a first hermetic seal and a second sealing sleeve of metal attached to the second end of the outer tube and to the conductor portion attached to

Conductive pin, according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the pin is configured for mounting on a one-pin plug and socket connector module, the conductive rod has a rear end adapted for connection to a connector cable and a front end adapted for engaging engagement in a contact socket of a receptacle module and each outer insulating layer and intermediate layer ends near the front end of the conductive rod.

Conductive pin according to claim 13, characterized in that the outer layer is made of polymer material and the intermediate layer comprises a polymer base material containing conductive additives, the base polymer material being chemically compatible with the polymer material of the outer layer.

15. Method for making a multi-layer conductive pin for an electrical connector or penetrator in an adverse environment, characterized by the fact that it comprises:
applying an intermediate layer of conductive or semi-conductive material to the outer surface of a conductive rod; and overmolding an insulating layer of an insulating polymer material on the intermediate layer, the insulating layer being of a material compatible with the material of the intermediate layer so that a bond is formed between the insulating layer and the intermediate layer;
whereby the connection between the insulating layer and the coating layer is substantially gap-free.

16. Method according to claim 15, characterized by the fact that the intermediate layer has a melting point no higher than the molding temperature, whereby the intermediate layer is softened and bonded to the insulating layer during the process overmoulding.
